DAYTONA 99 - ChazzNet's first trip there. |
||
| We embarked from South Carolina, 4 Mar,
1900, Thursday with 2 bikes in tow. We arrived 0200 right
on Daytona Beach, parked on a grassy strip between a
hotel and an abandoned partially demolished one.....Slept
from 0200 to 0400... woke up freezin our ass off... so we
broke out blankets and finished the sleep.... 0700 we
offloaded the bikes and started roamin'... traffic soon
choked off the streets so we headed back to grassy
knoll... we offloaded some lounging chairs lapsed into an
afternoon nap...(slept good.. almost like a coma)... we
noticed that we were the only "people of color"
around... that soon was made clear because - we got
kicked off the grassy knoll. They were very polite of
course... undaunted, we immediately set up camp at the
abandoned partially demolished hotel only 50 yards away.
We asked the question point blankly.. "Hey, where
all da blakz at?" We followed the directions to
a small strip next to Bethune Cookman college. Darkness
was upon us and it was a tad bit too cool for the shorts
we were sportin'. We needed a place to camp.. sleepin in
the rig was not comfy, to put it mildly... We lucked out
, got a good corner campsite. We set up the OP, the stove
and got a meal cooked before nightfall hit. We roamed,
rode and took a few flicks. All in all, it was a good
trip. It was unfortunate that is was segregated ....sort
of. The white harley riders stayed beachside and the
black riders stayed "mainside". Of course there
were a few excursions by curious adventurers.... delving
into the "dark-side" to see what the other side
was doing. I spoke to a few Harleyers and they of course,
could party with anyone.. I spoke to a few "RiceJet
Jockeys" and they echoed the same sentiment. I did
spend time on both sides. Overall Daytona Biker Week is a
8.5 on a 10 scale compared to Memorial Day Biker Weekend
which ( on a scale of 1 - 10) etches out a 2000!
Memorial Day starts Friday and DOES NOT STOP until Monday
night!! The law enforcement in Daytona were very
receptive and friendly in most areas. BUT - If you went
outside the Daytona beach city limits the "Grey
Leaches" followed bikers waiting for one to spit on
the sidewalk so they could pounce. I sat and watched them
roll behind biker after biker.... Black and White... at
least they did not discriminate.... that was a good
thing. Well enjoy Daytona.. but if you want to see the
sights, and taste the foods, and get an occasional
pat-down from a law enforcement officer because you fit
the description.... then come on down to Myrtle Beach on
Memorial Day..... Thank you for visiting my site. I do answer emails... it may take a few days..but I do. If you got some good flics from Memorial Day 99.. zap it to me and Ill rack it up. Be assured yu will getz du propfz..... ChazNet Peace be with you and enjoy life.... for it is short.. too damn short. |
